Japanese Browser Support

Most pages in KanjiDB contain Japanese characters encoded using the UTF-8 Unicode format. Many operating systems are not set up to view these characters by default. You may need to install additional files and/or alter your browser settings to be able to display Japanese characters.

then you have Japanese character support installed in your operating system and your browser is properly configured to display KanjiDB pages. If not, see the directions below.

Windows 2000/XP

Robert Y. Eng has put together a pair of excellent tutorials for installing East Asian language support under Window XP or Windows 2000 Professional. Once you have completed this installation (and possibly restarted), your browser should automatically detect and display Japanese characters without problems. If KanjiDB pages are not displaying correctly, you may need to try some of the following steps:

Internet Explorer (6.x)

To set preferred languages:

To set preferred languages:
  • Select in the browser menu: Tools > Options... This opens the Options window.
  • Click on the "Languages..." button. This opens the Languages and Character Encoding window.
  • Select Japanese in the "Select a language to add..." drop-down menu, and click the "Add..." button.
  • Click the "OK" button in the Languages and Character Encoding window, and then in the Options window to return to your browser.

To specify character encoding:

  • Check that "Unicode (UTF-8)" is selected in the View > Character Encoding menu.

To set the default character encoding to UTF-8:

  • Check that "Unicode (UTF-8)" is selected in the browser menu. (Go to View > Encoding > Unicode > UTF- 8).

To set the default character encoding to UTF-8:

Mac OS X (10.3 and up)

Mac OS X tends to have Asian character support built in. Your browser of choice should automatically detect and display Japanese characters without problems. If KanjiDB pages are not displaying correctly, you may need to try some of the following steps.

Safari

To specify character encoding:
  • Check that "Unicode (UTF-8)" is selected in the View > Text Encoding menu.

To set the default character encoding to UTF-8:

Firefox

To set preferred languages:
  • Select in the browser menu: Firefox > Preferences... This opens the Preferences window.
  • Click on the "General" icon to bring up the General pane.
  • Click on the "Languages..." button. This opens the Languages and Character Encoding window.
  • Select Japanese in the "Select a language to add..." drop-down menu, and click the "Add..." button.
  • Click the "OK" button in the Languages and Character Encoding window, and then in the Options window to return to your browser.

To specify character encoding:

  • Check that "Unicode (UTF-8)" is selected in the View > Character Encoding menu.

EDICT, KANJIDIC, and related files and terms are the property of The Electronic Dictionary Research and Development Group at Monash University and are used in conformance with the Group's license.
