Most pages in KanjiDB contain Japanese characters encoded using the UTF-8 Unicode format. Many operating systems are not set up to view these characters by default. You may need to install additional files and/or alter your browser settings to be able to display Japanese characters.

then you have Japanese character support installed in your operating system and your browser is properly configured to display KanjiDB pages. If not, see the directions below.
Robert Y. Eng has put together a pair of excellent tutorials for installing East Asian language support under Window XP or Windows 2000 Professional. Once you have completed this installation (and possibly restarted), your browser should automatically detect and display Japanese characters without problems. If KanjiDB pages are not displaying correctly, you may need to try some of the following steps:Internet Explorer (6.x)
To set preferred languages:
- Select in browser menu: Tools > Internet Options. This opens the Internet Options window.
- Click on the "Languages..." button. This opens the Language Preference window.
- Click on the "Add..." button.
- Select Japanese from drop-down list and click "OK".
- Click "OK" in the Language Preference window, and then in the Internet Options window to return to your browser.
Firefox
To set preferred languages:
- Select in the browser menu: Tools > Options... This opens the Options window.
- Click on the "Languages..." button. This opens the Languages and Character Encoding window.
- Select Japanese in the "Select a language to add..." drop-down menu, and click the "Add..." button.
- Click the "OK" button in the Languages and Character Encoding window, and then in the Options window to return to your browser.
To specify character encoding:
- Check that "Unicode (UTF-8)" is selected in the View > Character Encoding menu.
To set the default character encoding to UTF-8:
- Select in the browser menu: Tools > Options... This opens the Options window.
- Click on the "Languages..." button. This opens the Languages and Character Encoding window.
- Select "Unicode (UTF-8)" in the "Default Character Encoding" drop-down menu.
- Click "OK" in the Languages and Character Encoding window, and then in the Options window to return to your browser.
Opera
To set preferred languages:
- Select in the browser menu: Tools > Preferences... This opens the Preferences window.
- In the "General" tab, click on "Details...", which appears to the right of the "Select your preferred language for Opera and Web pages" drop-down menu. This opens the Languages window.
- Click on "Add..." to add Japanese to the "Preferred Languages for Web Pages" list.
- Click "OK" in the Languages window, then in the Preferences window to return to browser.
To specify character encoding:
- Check that "Unicode (UTF-8)" is selected in the browser menu. (Go to View > Encoding > Unicode > UTF- 8).
To set the default character encoding to UTF-8:
- Select in the browser menu: Tools > Preferences... This opens the Preferences window.
- In the "General" tab, click on "Details..." , which appears to the right of the "Select your preferred language for Opera and Web pages" drop-down menu. This opens the Languages window.
- Select "Unicode (UTF-8)" in the drop-down menu titled "Encoding to Assume for Pages Lacking Specification".
- Click "OK" in the Languages window, and then in the Preferences window to return to the browser.
Mac OS X tends to have Asian character support built in. Your browser of choice should automatically detect and display Japanese characters without problems. If KanjiDB pages are not displaying correctly, you may need to try some of the following steps.
Safari
To specify character encoding:
- Check that "Unicode (UTF-8)" is selected in the View > Text Encoding menu.
To set the default character encoding to UTF-8:
- Select in the browser menu: Safari > Preferences... This opens the Preferences window.
- Click on the "Appearance" icon to bring up the Appearance pane.
- Select "Unicode (UTF-8)" as the Default Encoding in the drop-down menu.
- Close the Preferences window to return to the browser.
Firefox
To set preferred languages:
- Select in the browser menu: Firefox > Preferences... This opens the Preferences window.
- Click on the "General" icon to bring up the General pane.
- Click on the "Languages..." button. This opens the Languages and Character Encoding window.
- Select Japanese in the "Select a language to add..." drop-down menu, and click the "Add..." button.
- Click the "OK" button in the Languages and Character Encoding window, and then in the Options window to return to your browser.
