Kanji Search is intended to provide ways to locate specific kanji characters. To search for kanji compounds or english meanings, you should use the Dictionary Search.

Direct Kanji Search Help

This search lets you directly locate a kanji character by one of several index code formats, or by the character itself if you have it available to copy and paste.

Characteristic Kanji Search Help

This search lets you search for a kanji character or characters that you can see which by one of several descriptive indexing methods, or by its reading or English translation.

Compositional Kanji Search Help

This search allows you to search for specific kanji by common visual elements present in the glyph. From the list below, check off elements that appear in the kanji, then click Search.

Note that some pairs of elements may appear to be very similar. These are indicated like this. If you have no luck with one of them, try the other. This system can be very powerful for locating specific kanji, but may take a little practice and experimentation. Please note that Compositional Kanji searches are presently limited to JIS X 0208 kanji, and do not index the supplementary JIS X 0212 kanji set.
